MIRNEWS.101 19 JULY 1991 4th EXTRAVEHICULAR ACTIVITY MIR-CREW: This EVA started on 19 July 1991 at 1010UTC, so 20 min. earlier than planned. The EVA lasted long enough to enable me to log (6 pages compact written text) interesting radiotraffic during 3 passes. The crew again worked on the Sofora structure. During the construction they use 'metal with a memory for previous shape'. In this way the parts are not so voluminous during transport and during construction it is convenient to get the shape needed. This just by heating the material. In the past there have been experiments with this 'memory metal', but now it seems to be practically used. During their work the crew used a crane installed during previous EVA-s for transport of material. For the future they have all kinds of plans with the Safora, still sounding a little bit like 'sciencefiction' (using atomic energy, radiation of energy to earth, etc., but also various instruments and experiments). After completing the 2d phase of the construction the crew mended or corrected an antenna. During the passes in orb. 31023 (1340UTC) and 31022 (1511UTC) the Ozony were still very active. Again with good coordination and disciplined. During their return in the airlock (Sh.S.O.) of Module-D MIR was for me out of range. This must have been around 1630UTC. During the pass in orb. 31023 (1647UTC) the cosmonauts were in the Sh.S.O. waiting for the equalisation of pressures between that section and the Scientific Instrument Section (P.N.O.). During EVA-s they use a second transmitter for 143 mc, tuned some 3 Kcs lower. In orbit 31024 the Ozony took a rest but already 1.5 Hrs later Artsebarskiy was doing ham-work on 145.550 mc using c/s U7MIR. 5D AND 6th EVA: These EVA-s will take place on resp. 23 and 27 July 1991. In the 6th one they have to conclude the construction of the Sofora system. Chris v.d. Berg, NL-9165/A-UK3202.
